How to navigate and use the GLI Quality Tool
The GLI Quality Tool is built around a stepwise, four-phase roadmap. Each phase addresses the same twelve Quality Systems Essentials — from Facilities & Safety through Continual Improvement — with increasing depth as your laboratory progresses. These instructions will help you get started and make the most of the tool.
Understand the quality management framework
Begin by reviewing the Quality Management overview. It explains the rationale behind the stepwise approach and how the twelve Quality Systems Essentials align with international laboratory quality frameworks.
Start with Phase 1
Phase 1 covers foundational activities across all twelve essentials. Work through each essential in order, or focus on those most relevant to your laboratory's current needs. Each essential page provides phase-appropriate guidance and activities.
Use the checklists to assess progress
For each Quality Systems Essential, phase-specific checklists are available. Use them to evaluate your laboratory's current status, identify gaps, and plan your next steps before moving forward.
Progress through the phases
Once your laboratory has established the practices outlined in Phase 1, move to Phase 2, then Phase 3, and finally Phase 4. Each phase builds on the previous one, introducing more advanced activities across the same twelve essentials. Phase 4 emphasizes continual improvement and long-term sustainability.
Download resources for offline use
The Download section provides offline versions of checklists, templates, and reference documents — particularly useful for laboratories with limited internet access.
