Title

Make an action plan to upgrade the facilities and safety of the laboratory to get in compliance with the basic safety requirements for TB laboratories

Why

The World Health Organization has published a laboratory biosafety manual specifically written for TB laboratory. The 2nd chapter of this manual provides a set of essential safety requirements that every TB laboratory should comply with, regardless of which procedures are undertaken.

What

Make a SMART action plan for upgrading the laboratory facilities and safety situation such that the essential safety requirements as provided in chapter 2 of the WHO TB Laboratory Biosafety Manual are complied with. Note that this can be a multiple year plan when a lot of improvements are needed. It is better to develop a realistic plan that runs for a long time than to develop an over-ambitious plan that cannot be adhered to.

How & who

Biosafety Officer:

  1. Assess the current state of the facilities and safety situation in your laboratory and investigate which requirements of chapter 2 of the WHO TB Laboratory Biosafety Manual are not complied with.
  2. Discuss the results of the assessment with the Laboratory Manager and determine which activities are needed to get into compliance with each requirement.
  3. Make an action plan together with the Laboratory Manager to execute the activities under point 2 and achieve compliance with the essential safety requirements for TB laboratories.
  4. Store this action plan in the dedicated Action Plan folder and monitor timely execution of action plans. Discuss the progress of implementation of the action plan during the bimonthly meetings with the Laboratory Manager.

Laboratory Manager:

  1. The Biosafety Officer will perform an assessment to determine which essential TB laboratory safety requirements are not yet adhered to. Discuss the findings of this assessment and determine which activities are needed to get into compliance with each requirement.
  2. Develop a planning together with the Biosafety Officer to execute the activities under point 2 and achieve compliance with the essential safety requirements for TB laboratories. Discuss progress of execution of this plan during the bimonthly meetings with the Biosafety Officer.
